Monday, Feb 27– We will be doing a worksheet on linking verbs, discussing free verse in poetry, and writing our own poem. The poem we’re examining in class is “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde. Link to Poem

February 21-24

Tuesday, Feb. 21– We are doing an introduction to our next unit on poetry!

Homework: The rough draft of the science fair research paper and bibliography are due

Wednesday, Feb. 22- We will continue the lesson from the previous day.  We will fill out a graphic organizer from a poem of our choice.

Homework: Take home the poem and graphic organizer if not completed in class.

Thursday, Feb 23– We will be breaking into partner groups to work on poetry stations.  We will also be looking at a PowerPoint on linking verbs.

Homework: There will be a quiz on the helping verbs on Friday.  Students may want to memorize the list in song form to help them memorize! Link to helping verbs song

Friday, Feb 24- We will take a quiz on the helping verbs.  Students will be required to come up with all 23 helping verbs.  We will share the poems we wrote with each other and have some time to free read poetry.

Friday we are having our spelling bee!  Remember to study your words this week!

Feb 13-17

Monday, Feb 13– We  are working on how to write a good paragraph.

Homework: Students should come up with a list of new spelling words (words they don’t know how to spell) for the week.  Students will also need to finish “Recognizing Perfect Topic Sentences” from The Perfect Paragraph handout.

Tuesday, Feb 14– We are taking another day to discuss writing good paragraphs. We will also start a grammar lesson on helping verbs.

Homework: Spelling list and “Recognizing Perfect Topic Sentences” are due today

Wednesday, Feb 15– The students will meet in groups to write a bibliography.  We will have Q&A time, so come with questions about science fair!

Homework: Students may have a helping verb worksheet if not finished in class.

Thursday, Feb 16-The students will meet in groups to edit research papers.  Students may choose to bring their own research paper to have edited on this day.

Friday, Feb 17– We will take the final spelling test and starting a discussion on linking verbs.

Science fair rough draft and bibliography  are due today

February 6-10

Monday, Feb 6– We are viewing a PowerPoint on transitive and intransitive verbs.  We will create a spider web of topics and subtopics for a research paper we are doing in class.Link to PowerPoint: Transitive and Intertransitive Verbs

Homework: Complete problems 6-10 in the verbs packet and finish web

Tuesday, Feb 7– We are creating an 8 question quiz for a friend using transitive and intransitive verbs (we will correct in class).  We will start taking notes on index cards for our research paper.

Homework: Web, problems 6-10, and spelling words are due

Wednesday, Feb 8– We will be finishing up our research and creating an outline

Thursday and Friday– We will spend these days writing the first draft of our research paper.

Homework: The outline is due on Thursday and the first draft on Monday, Feb 13

Note: We are creating our own spelling lists this week.  Each student will choose 10 words they don’t know to study this week.  On Friday, the students will give each other the final spelling test.  I want to approve each student’s list on Tuesday.
